It is worth hiring a car at Bergamo airport when you arrive at Milan Linate Airport so that you can explore the beautiful province and stunning Lakes of Garda and Como.
Within an hour or two's drive from Milan there are a wide range of excellent tourist destinations which are also easily accessible by bus or train including the beautiful Lake Como which is the easiest of Italy's lakes to reach from Milan. The town of Como, at the southern end of the lake, is just 50km north of Milan and can be reached by hiring a car or by frequent trains from Milan's Stazione Nord and Stazione Centrale. The lovely resort of Stresa on the western shore of Lake Maggiore can also be reached by trains from Stazione Centrale and Stazione Porta Garibaldi with a journey time of just over an hour.
You can hire a car from Milan Linate Airport and drive to nearby Pavia which is a historic town that once rivalled Milan. If offers a number of historic sights including medieval towers, the Romanesque Basilica di San Michele and (several miles north of the town) is the decorative Renaissance charterhouse the Certosa di Pavia. Cremona is another historic city on the Lombard Plain, situated to the south-east of Milan it is famous for its violin industry and is home to a Stradivarius Museum and some very fine architecture.
